Patents are either maintained through annuities, which is sometimes referred to renewing a patent, but technically speaking a patent provides a right to the holder of 20 years as long as maintenance fees are paid. After the 20 years a patent can not be further renewed, it is considered expired and becomes an invention in the public domain
